Why do fingers get wrinkled after a long bath?

The tips of fingers and toes are covered by a tough, thick layer of skin (epidermis) with a lot of water-loving keratin.  During a long bath or soaking in the pool for a long period of time, the keratin absorbs water making the outer layer of the epidermis swell. However, there is no room for this expansion which leads to "pruning" effect or wrinkles.

The wrinkling is most visible on fingers and toes because the epidermis is much thicker on the hands and feet than elsewhere on the body.
