Where do pearls come from?

Pearls are hard objects produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of an oyster or any living shelled mollusk. Pearls actually starts as minute irritants like a grain of sand that got caught inside the oyster. As a reaction, the oyster secretes calcium carbonate to coat the irritant and protect its sensitive soft tissues. Over time, the tiny grain of sand will be coated with several layers of calcium carbonate, increasing its size tremendously and giving it that nacreous and iridescent quality.

Natural pearls are rare, takes a great deal of time to produce and are very expensive that is why most pearls available are man-made or cultured from pearl oysters.
