What is the longest word in the English language

pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosisThe longest word in the English language, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. It has a total of 45 letters and is defined as a lung disease contracted from the inhalation of very fine silica particles, specifically from a volcano. The only other word with the same amount of letters is its plural, pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconioses.

This word was coined by Everett Smith, the President of The National Puzzlers' League, in 1935 purely for the purpose of inventing a new "longest word". The Oxford English Dictionary described the word as factitious. Nevertheless it also appears in the Webster's, Random House, and Chambers dictionaries.
