What causes hiccups?

Don't you just hate it when you get hiccups? It is just uncomfortable and embarrassing! I have yet to meet somebody who enjoys hiccuping!

Hiccups are actually the involuntary contraction of the diaphragm (the dome-shaped muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen). Contraction of the diaphragm  causes an immediate and brief closure of the vocal cords, which produces the characteristic sound of a hiccup. What actually causes the hiccup remains a mystery a few factors have something to do with it: eating or drinking too fast; being nervous or excited; or having irritation in the stomach and/or throat.

There are lots of remedies for hiccups.  One of the most popular cures for hiccups would have to be holding your breath and counting to 10.  Another one is putting sugar under your tongue.  The most weird remedy for hiccups I've ever heard is a good scare. Apparently, petrifying a hiccup sufferer can stop the involuntary contraction of the diaphragm.  I just hope a hiccup attack doesn't doesn't end up in a heart attack.
