Is there a piece of land in the world that is not owned by any country?

Believe it or not, there is an area on Earth that is not part of any country.  Marie Byrd Land, a portion in West Antarctica, has not been claimed by any sovereign nation because of its remoteness.  It is by far the largest single unclaimed territory on Earth, with an area of 1,610,000 km². The name came from Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr.,a pioneering American aviator and polar explorer who led an expedition in the Antarctic Plateau.  He named the area Marie Byrd Land in honor of his wife. Awww, ain't that sweet?!

Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents. There are no permanent human residents, but anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the year at the research stations scattered across the continent. Only cold-adapted plants and animals survive there, including penguins, seals, nematodes, tardigrades, mites, many types of algae and other microorganisms, and tundra vegetation.
